Degrees and Certifications:
Ms. Allison Fabrizio
My name is Allison Fabrizio and I am the Library Media Specialist at Springhurst. This is my second year teaching. I am from Long Island and currently live in the Bronx. I went to college at SUNY New Paltz, St. Joseph's College and completed my graduate degree at Long Island University.
The Springhurst School Library Media Center serves as extension of the classroom, providing lessons, services, materials, and facilities which support and enhance the curriculum while enabling students to develop into independent learners.
Students in kindergarten through third grade visit the library on a weekly basis. The library media program promotes an appreciation for literature and encourages students to read for both pleasure and information, contributing much to student literacy. In addition, there is an integrated and sequential series of skill lessons provided. These are based upon the New York State Learning Standards and the ASSL (American Association of School Libraries) Standards which are designed to acquaint students with libraries and basic information resources.
Having established this basic knowledge in the early grades, students in the fourth and fifth grades have opportunities to work with all kinds of information, whether that information is in the library media center, in the computer lab, or in the classroom. This is due to greater curriculum demands for research and information retrieval. A collaborative effort between the library media specialist, computer teacher, and classroom teachers supports this effort, helping students achieve information skills such as locating, selecting, analyzing, evaluating, and utilizing information, and communicating knowledge. Currently, fourth and fifth grade students are working towards completing coursework through Code.org in conjunction with Ms. Bauer in their technology classes.
