Extracurricular Activities/Athletic Committee

  • Extracurricular Activities/Athletics Committee Progress Report, August 6, 2020

    • The committee discussed if the reopening plans had any impact on our initial recommendations.  Our initial recommendations remain the same with the addition of the suggestion for high school extracurricular activities.

    • Recommendations:

    • Focus September on new routines associated with reopening of schools.  Begin to phase in clubs at all levels as appropriate

    • Any large group gatherings in the fall (back to school night, etc.) should be virtual

    • Because the high school will be mostly virtual for core academic classes, the committee makes the recommendation that all clubs and extracurricular activities that can be in person at the school should attempt to meet that way as much as possible.  Thank you to the high school students on the committee for stressing the importance of this.

    • Creative scheduling of clubs and extracurricular activities will begin to take place based on the needs of students, staff and families.  Student equity should be strongly considered when scheduling clubs to allow access for all students (e.g., transportation issues, etc.)

  • Extracurricular Activities/Athletics Committee Progress Report, July 23, 2020

    • Background Information shared:
      • Summary of athletics in NY State and Section 1
      • Overview of health and safety guidelines associated with extracurricular activities
      • Committee to focus for now on activities that occur in beginning of school year (back to school nights, orientations) and only school-related activities

    • Springhurst Discussion:
      • Childcare Center -- first priority
        • Who will it serve (essential workers only; all children)
        • Where will it be (space is an issue)
      • ELA/Math Academies -- second priority
      • Everything else will have to be on pause while we get our footing
      • Other clubs digitally only for those that can work in that format (non-digital clubs “on pause”)
      • New Parent Breakfast & Back to School Nights virtual ONLY
      • Concerns about mixing the children in groups for extracurricular activities despite their cohorts & larger groups; may be OK with  social distancing / masks
      • Transportation Issues for those not in school that afternoon
      • If A day B day format, could clubs potentially meet on each day for different groups

    • Middle School and High School Discussion:
      • Intramural sports at modified level once clearance occurs
      • Conversational meetings can take place virtually (e.g., Back to School Night)
      • Later start date for clubs - late October
      • New school routine in the beginning of the year needs time to settle in before extracurriculars
      • Which clubs can meet completely virtually vs. more needed to meet in person?
        • Depending on size, ability to social distance
        • Possibly split into smaller groups for in person meetings
      • Hard for bigger events like performances (musicals & concerts) to be safe
      • Instructional music could be remote

    • Key Takeaways:
      • Focus September on new routines associated with reopening of schools
      • Begin to phase in clubs at all levels as appropriate
      • Any large group gatherings in the fall (e.g., Back to School Night) should be virtual
      • The committee will reevaluate based on the reopening structure of the District.
