Middle Years Program At Dobbs Ferry Middle SchoolFor more than a decade the High School has been proud to say that it is an International Baccalaureate (IB) World School. Throughout this same time period, the Middle School has been preparing its students for the rigors of the IB Diploma Program. As the IB Diploma Program continues to expand its HL & SL offerings and the enrollment increases, the natural next step for the District is the adoption of the IB Middle Years Program (MYP).
The IB Middle Years Program is a comprehensive, interdisciplinary program. Rather than concentrating on particular content knowledge, students' intellectual and social development is the focus of the MYP.
The MYP insists upon the thorough study of various disciplines and encourages students to:
see the interrelatedness of disciplines
appreciate other cultures, as well as understand one's own history and traditions
develop admiration for the elegance and richness of human expression
learn to communicate effectively in one's own language as well as in a second language \
become competent in the use of information technology, and acquire a genuine love of learning and disciplined habits of mind and body that will guide their young adulthood
Young adolescents need to see the relevancy in what they are learning and be able to make connections between the different content areas. This belief is a cornerstone of middle school philosophy and one that is supported by years of research. The MYP aligns with this philosophy and provides the framework and training necessary for teachers to raise our program to a higher level.
The MYP is designed specifically for grades 6-10. The common language and central elements of the MYP will provide a better connection between the middle and high school experiences. It will also increase the professional dialogue among the faculties of both schools.
The Dobbs Ferry School District is one of the top school districts in Westchester County and our IB program sets us apart from the rest. We are committed to providing a high-quality education for all students. By adopting the MYP, we will continue to build on this solid foundation. It is a natural progression for the District and an advantageous choice for our students.
